Iraq rally for Bush shoe attackerIraq rally for Bush shoe attacker |
One of the shoes sailed over the president's head and slammed into the wall behind him and he had to duck to miss the other one. Maliki tried to block the second shoe with his arm. "It's like going to a political rally and have people yell at you. It's a way for people to draw attention," Bush said. "I don't know what the guy's cause was. I didn't feel the least bit threatened by it." The journalist was leapt on by Iraqi security officials and US secret service agents and dragged from the room screaming and struggling.
Bush's fleeting visit to Baghdad was aimed at marking the recent passage of a U.S.-Iraq security pact that paves the way for U.S. troops to pull out of Iraqi cities by July next year and withdraw completely by the end of 2011.

Ooga Ooga! Men Overspend to Attract Mates |
The biggest male spenders in the survey were found to have the highest number of reported past partners and desired the most future partners.
The finding, detailed in the current issue of the journal Evolutionary Psychology, did not hold with women.
Vying for women is simply what men do and have done for hundreds of thousands of years, said study leader Daniel Kruger, a social and evolutionary psychologist at the University of Michigan's School of Public Health. But how they entice mates has evolved.
"Men in the ancestral environment were valued if they were good providers," Kruger said. "Now we have this new consumer culture, so basically we show our potential through the consumer goods that we purchase, rather than being a good hunter or providing protection."
Financial habits of men
Kruger used data collected from telephone surveys of more than 400 men and women with an average age of 34 (100 men and 309 women). Participants rated how much they agreed with three statements about their financial habits, such as "I always live within my income range," and "Each income period, I set aside at least ten percent for savings."
(A person who highly agreed with the statements would be considered conservative in matters financial, as opposed to consumptive.)
They also indicated marital status and sexual partners (their count for the past five years and number desired in the future).
Men who spent more (saved less) and who were more likely to shell out more than they earned reported having more sexual partners in the past five years and desired more future partners than other guys in the study.
Specifically, the 25 percent of men who were most conservative about spending had an average of three partners in the past five years and desired about one partner in the next five years. The 2 percent of men with the riskiest financial strategies had double those numbers.
For women, financial consumption wasn't significantly related to past or future mates.
Why we're in debt
Kruger said the results could help to explain why so many people are in a financial mess right now.
"It is partially a result of our economic system and recent financial policies, but I really do think that our evolved mating strategies have an influence," Kruger said. "Our competition for economic displays drives our consumer economy and culture of affluence."
He added, "In terms of the current mortgage crisis, the findings suggest that one of the reasons why we overextend ourselves is that we're basically in a status race. We have expectations that spiral upward as people make more money, and everyone wants to show that they are better than average."

Nirmala Shankar got married on November 30 - Love: a temporary insanity, curable by marriage. |

Nirmala had quit her job in the HR department in Mumbai-based Edelweiss Securities to settle down in Chennai with K Shankar Narayanan, a manager with Shell India. "We first met on September 13 and the following day our families decided on the wedding plans," she says.
Eventually, the couple did keep their date, but it took a lot of doing. Four days before the wedding, while the prospective bride and her family were waiting to board the Chennai Mail at CST, Nirmala was among the 100 seriously injured in the firing.
Shot in the head, she was rushed to St George's Hospital and later JJ Hospital, Mumbai. With the hospital teeming with casualties and doctors weighed down by VIP visits and media scrutiny, her family overnight decided to move her to Chennai for better attention. Her father, Ponnudurai, who works with RBI, then brought her back to Chennai, against medical advice.

Nirmala told her family she did not want the wedding to be called off. "I met my fiance the next time in the hospital on Thursday with the injury. We decided nothing would change our wedding plans," she says.
The same day, medical tests confirmed there was shrapnel in the frontal lobe of her brain. When Nirmala's father took her reports to a neurosurgeon at Apollo Specialities, doctors confirmed she would require immediate surgery
"But the family did not want to postpone the wedding. We had little option but to put the patient on a broad spectrum antibiotic to ensure that the infection
did not spread. The injection had to be taken every 12 hours," says L Murugan, neurosurgeon, Apollo Specialities Hospital.
"I was a little scared," says Shankar. "It was raining and the doctors had told me to ensure that she didn't get her head wet. But it was the third time we were meeting and I couldn't say no to her. So we did everything as per plan, shopping included," he says, drawing her close.
Twenty-four hours later, the two families and their relatives gathered for the reception followed by the muhurtham on Sunday morning.
The next day, Shankar and Nirmala walked into the hospital for her surgery. The doctors performed a minimal access brain surgery using neuro-navigation, where they drilled into the skull with an intra-operative ultrasonogram and laser.
"It's like a GPS. We track the metal piece on the computer screen and then remove it with minimal cuts. We did see some more metal pieces scattered on the scalp but we did not remove it as they were too tiny. But she has responded well and is likely to be discharged on Wednesday," Dr Murugan says.
Now Nirmala plans to return to Mumbai for further treatment. "It's the place I grew up. It's my city and I love it. Nothing can change that. I would want to go there for my treatment and return when I am fine," she says smiling at Shankar, who nods in approval.

Hindu-Christian wedlock invalid under HMA: SC |
According to the petition, Raj, a Roman Catholic Christian, married Pavani on Oct 24, 1996 in a temple by tying a ‘thaali’ (sacred thread) in the absence of any representative from either side.
Subsequently, the marriage was registered on November 2, 1996 under Section 8 of the Hindu Marriage Act 1955. The matrimonial court rejected her plea for divorce saying the marriage was valid under the Hindu Marriage Act 1955 even if one of the parties belonged to another faith.
However, the high court upheld her plea and said the marriage was void as the Act postulated marriage only between Hindus following which the husband filed the SLP in the apex court.
Dismissing the Christian husband’s appeal, the apex court said Section 5 of the Act makes it clear that a marriage may be solemnised between any two Hindus if the conditions contained in the said section were fulfilled.
“The usage of the expression ‘may’ in the opening line of the Section in our view does not make the provision of Section 5 optional. On the other hand it indicates in positive terms that a marriage can be solemnized between two Hindus if the conditions indicated were fulfilled.”
In other words, in the event the conditions remain unfulfilled a marriage between two Hindus could not be solemnised. The expression may used in the opening words of Section 5 is not directory as has been sought to be argued but mandatory and non-fulfilment thereof would not permit a marriage under the Act between two Hindus, the bench observed.
The apex court also upheld the validity of Pavani's subsequent marriage to another person as the high court had granted divorce to her by holding the first marriage as illegal since the husband was a Christian.

Haryana Deputy CM Chander Mohan sacked |
Mohan, elder son of former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal, has been removed as Deputy Chief Minister by Governor A R Kidwai on the advice of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, official sources said here.
"He has been removed (as Deputy CM) as he had been absent from his office since past some time," the sources said.
Mohan went missing from public view over a month ago and was not seen either in the state party headquarter here or in his parent's residence in Hissar. He had not attended the cabinet meetings held in the past few days.
His removal has come shortly after media reports that he had converted to Islam and married a woman, who was a former Deputy Advocate General in Punjab. The woman has also reportedly converted to Islam.
Mohan's whereabouts were not known even to his close aides, his staff in the office of Deputy Chief Minister and at his residence in Panchkula near here. He had not been attending his office here for the past over two weeks.
His younger brother Kuldeep Bishnoi had recently told reporters that his brother was fine and he had talked to him over phone some time back.
Mohan, who is already married and has two children, surfaced on Sunday with a woman. They told a private news channel that they embraced Islam and entered into wedlock recently.
The girl, Anuradha, told the channel that the two had been meeting since past five years. She has become Fiza while Mohan has changed his name to Chand Mohammad.

Are you in touch with your partner? Love Thoughts |
The holding of hands, her fingers filling-in the gaps between yours, those cozy bear hugs in times of crises, not that one passionate kiss, but those numerous small peckers that came unannounced, the comforting rub on your shoulder or that 'I'm there' squeeze of your hand - the comforting sensation of touch creates a lasting bond between couples. "Every relationship starts with a physical touch. And it is that first touch that weaves around itself a tale of trust, assurance, faith, passion and memory. Memories that keep you connected and trust that keeps you together. This can happen only when a comforting touch assures you of being there all the time for each other," says psychologist Dr. Aruna Bruta.
A recent study claimed that touchy-feely couples, who did everything from holding hands, hugging and kissing to having sex, had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Research has also revealed that caressing/ stroking stimulates the brain to release Oxytocin, which is also called the 'Cuddle Hormone'. Not only does Oxytocin calm a person's mind, it also increases the desire to be touched further. Hence, it places a major catalyst in initiating the lovemaking process.
Sexual touching directs a biological and psychological arousal, a heady rush of endorphins, which are also our body's natural pain-relievers. It also heightens the testosterone levels, giving a kick to one's sex drive. On the other hand, non sexual touching is expressions of affection, care and concern, which keeps a couple, bonded and lack of the same makes a relationship very mundane on a day-to-day basis. Remember a physical contact is not just a precursor to sex.
However sadly in the rush of everyday life, couples often lose out these small, yet special physical touches. As Aruna says, "Over the years, my husband has stopped touching me, he has grown colder. Not only we have stopped having sex, but even the warmth has gone out of our marriage." Each one of us craves for touch. While men often use it as a prelude to sex, women find a lot of emotional strength from the act of touching. Vrinda Goswami, a 28-year-old telemarketing executive reveals, "After a hectic day I want my partner to soothe me with caring gestures like caressing, cuddling, hugging or by simply making me rest upon his chest. But what he interprets from the same is the need of sex and I can't say 'no' for I know that's how I can get 'my kinda' intimacy with him."
1. Hold hands
Not just in private, but also in public. This is the easiest way to remain connected. Be it a busy market place, a party or a friend's place, don't shy away from holding each other's hand. "I keep holding my husband's arm whenever we are out. Over the years it has become a habit for us. And even he loves that," says Namita Tiwari, a 24-year-old Delhi-based teacher. "Playful or casual at times and comforting and reassuring at others, holding hands can mean a lot to a partner in need. Holding hands in public also works as a declaration of the fact that 'we are together' and that can double up the strength of your relationship," says relationship expert Aroona.
2. Hug
If Munna bhai's 'jadu ki jhappi' didn't inspire you enough, then remember that a hug implies far more than a meeting of two bodies. "It can be a reward if your partner has done something special for you, an assurance that you are there, an attempt to embrace your partner's sorrows when he/she's low or a celebration of joy," explains psychiatrist Dr. Sameer Parekh. "We use hugs as a means to patch-up. Every heated argument between us ends the moment either of us opens our arms wide inviting a warm hug," tells Kishore Rane, a 26 year old insurance agent. When a simple hug can achieve so much, why shy away from opening your arms to shower him/her with the warmest of embraces anywhere and anytime?

Woman swept to sea during proposal on Oregon coast |
A romantic marriage proposal on the Oregon coast turned deadly for the bride-to-be when a wave swept her out to sea. Scott Napper had taken 22-year-old Leafil Alforque to Proposal Rock near Neskowin Beach to pop the question at a place that got its name from couples ready to marry. Napper and Alforque had been dating since they met on the Internet in 2005.
But Alforque had arrived in Oregon on a visa from the Philippines just three days before the fateful trip to the coast.
Napper said the tide had receded around Proposal Rock on Saturday when the couple began to walk to it. He planned to propose and give her the ring he carried in his pocket.
About 10 feet from the rock, a wave about 3 feet high suddenly came toward them.
"I turned into it to keep from getting pulled under it," Napper said.
By the time he turned to find Alforque, only 4-foot-11 and 93 pounds, she had been caught by the receding waters.
"She was about 30 feet away, getting swept away," Napper said.
The 45-year-old Silverton man tore off his jacket to get rid of any extra weight, and when he looked up again she was gone.
"That's the last I saw of her," he said in an interview Wednesday, breaking into tears.
Emergency personnel called by a someone on the beach arrived within minutes. His own phone no longer worked after being exposed to the water.
Along with rescuers, he searched for any sign of Alforque."I yelled for her," he said. "I was praying to God."
At one point, he saw someone wearing red — the color of her jacket — on the shore signaling for him. But he quickly realized it was a rescuer.
Thick fog and dangerous water conditions hampered the rescue efforts before the search was suspended on Monday. Her 25-year-old sister, Nova Alforque, said the family hopes the body can be recovered.
"My mother is always crying, day and night," Nova Alforque said by telephone from the Philippines. "She wants my sister back. Even if she is dead, she wants her body to bury."
The Tillamook County Sheriff's Office is routinely checking the beach and looking for possible witnesses, said Sheriff Todd Anderson. Police don't suspect foul play, he said.

* Love does involve the emotions, it simply refuses to be ruled by them
* I still believe that all you need is love.

Lover's Tips |

Women 'prefer men with deeper voices'
The research among African hunter-gatherers found that men with deeper voices attract women more than those with squeaky ones when they are at their most fertile. Deeper-voiced men are deemed better hunters who offer more protection, the study claimed.
According to the study, women who were nursing a child prefer higher-pitched male voices than fertile women who had not recently given birth, reports New Scientist. Coren Apicella, an anthropologist at Harvard University and leader of the study, said the Hadza - hunter-gatherers native to northern Tanzania - have limited exposure to the mass media.
Cut off from the daily bombardment of advertisements, pop songs and newscasts that''s typical in much of the world, they were an ideal population in which to study innate sexual preferences, Coren said. To reach the conclusion, the boffin spent six months studying vocal preferences among Hadza men and women.
She tested the vocal preferences of 88 Hadza men and women. They heard a member of the opposite sex saying the Swahili word "hujambo" - loosely translated as hello - in a computer-altered high and low register. Women were asked whether the voice belonged to someone likely to make a good hunter and husband, while men rated the voices in terms of skill as a forager and suitability as a wife. Apicella found that the Hadza men judged deeper-voiced women to be better foragers, but they fancied the highest-pitched women.
Nursing women favoured higher-pitched tones, while fertile women showed a slight preference for the deeper voices, she found. When Hadza women start breast-feeding, their foraging falls off. "They rely on men a lot more to bring in food and resources. Maybe a higher-pitched voice is signalling pro-social behaviour,” the expert said.
