THE TREE HOUSE: To save tree, man builds house around it

It's a storybook house turned real. Built around the branches of a 65-year-old mango tree, a three-storey home in Udaipur is now a part of the Limca Book of Records. It's owner, a civil engineer says, he built the house for his love of nature.

The engineer, K P Singh adds, "This work has been done out of my passion and love for nature. At the back of my mind is the story of Phantom and the tree house that he had."

Though inspired by the magical world of comic books, Singh's house is built using sound engineering skills. Made of light weight construction material, it boasts of two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a library.


And bringing the outdoors indoors means there's always interesting company like lizards and ants. Singh says it's as much a treat to live in as it is to see.

"When the children are here, the branches of the tree is their favourite spot," says he.



When Singh bought the land, he insisted that all development would be done with sensitivity towards the trees.

But what makes him really happy says he, is the fact that for the last eight years, he has been noticing that the tree is actually growing.

Singh's castle in the air has lasted for nine years. The house is only nine feet off the ground, but for Singh, it is as good as being on cloud nine.

Salt Deserts of IRAN

In 2003 I was given permission to take aerial photos in Iran, the first person to be given such permission since the Islamic revolution. Much like today, it was a very awkward time to be an American photographer working in Iran, as US forces were both Iraq and Afganistan, and the country was proceeding with its controversial nuclear development program. I went there on assignment for the French and German editions of GEO Magazine to document the little known salt deserts in the southern part of the country. Iran has some of the most spectacular geological features in the world, with rapidly folding mountain ranges separating large valleys of salt flats. On the slopes between the two are ancient cities that get their drinking and agricultural water from underground aquaducts that are thousands of years old. I stayed in Iran for five weeks, and was forced to leave after being detained by security forces on three separate occasions. But before I left I was able to take very rare photos of some of the most strange geological patterns on earth; like the wind eroded yardangs of the Dasht-e Lut and the swirling patterns of salt domes in the Dasht-e Kavir.

Laura Santarelli's cat Orazi weighs a hefty16kg - 13kg more than the average cat.

The pair live in Eupilio, Italy, where it seems the cat food is not in short supply.

It is not known if Orazi is suffering from obesity, or is simply a very large cat.

However the problem of fat pets is on the rise, going hand in hand, it seems, with the march of human obesity.

Last month it emerged that nearly two million dogs in Britain are overweight.

A report by PDSA, the veterinary charity, found that almost one in three dogs is overweight - nine per cent more than last year.

Many of the animals suffer from heart disease, breathing difficulties, diabetes and arthritis.

The north-west of England was found to have the worst problem, with 31 per cent of dogs classed as overweight. It was followed closely by the Midlands at 29 per cent.

Pet owners can help their cats lose weight by gradually cutting back on the amount of food they get each day until the animal is eating approximately the right caloric requirements for his desired normal weight.

However, it is best to consult a vet before changing your pet's diet.
